What else can you find interesting in the sky?

Sometimes, falling and burning space debris can be confused with a “shooting star”, but, as a rule, its speed is half the speed of falling stars. Likewise, flying satellites and the International Space Station can be seen in the sky.

It looks very bright – brighter than any planet except Venus – a star, white or bluish, that crosses the southern sky. Sometimes the ISS can disappear halfway when hiding in the shadow of the Earth. If you’re lucky, you can see not only the station, but also a cargo or manned ship arriving at it. Then they will look like two stars, very different in brightness, following the same course.

A very beautiful phenomenon is the northern lights. Approximately once a decade, it “finishes off” even to New-York, for example, it was in March 2015.

At about the same altitude as the meteors, noctilucent clouds can be seen in summer. Such clouds consist of the finest ice crystals and are much higher than usual. They are illuminated by the Sun, which is invisible to observers from Earth at night, so that noctilucent clouds look like a shining veil hanging in the northern part of the sky.

Every few years, bright comets fly up to the Earth, which can be observed with binoculars or with the naked eye, although the Southern Hemisphere has been more lucky lately.

How to distinguish a planet from a star?

This is called opposition because the planet stands exactly opposite the Sun for an observer from Earth, although sometimes the maximum approach of the planets does not coincide with opposition. So the opposition of Mars was on May 22, 2016, and the closest meeting was on May 31.

The brightest planet in the earthly firmament is Venus. During the convergence of our planets, individual observers may even see it in the form of a thin crescent, although for most it will look just like a very bright star. Jupiter is visible very well and for a very long time before and after the opposition, which was in early spring. Saturn is also quite bright now.

How to observe satellites?

A satellite flying in space is visible as a dim, unblinking white star. If something flashing is flying, you are most likely seeing an airplane.

A separate category of satellites is the telecommunication Iridiums. Thanks to the shape of their antenna, they throw bright sunbeams at the Earth, which look like a slowly moving star that appears, quickly flares up, dims and disappears. Now the evening time for observation of the International Space Station begins.
